Choosing paint and car colours by your birth element: how Vietnamese people do it, and what else to weigh

Picking colours to match your birth element is a very Vietnamese habit. Here is how to look up your element correctly, which colours are said to suit or clash, and what heat, upkeep and safety add to the decision.

Short answer: to choose colours by birth element the Vietnamese way, first find your mệnh, the element of your lunar birth year, taking care if you were born in January or early February, when you may belong to the previous lunar year. Then use two groups of colours: those of your own element and of the element that "feeds" yours are considered favourable; those of the element that "controls" yours are best kept to a minimum. For house paint and cars, though, heat, upkeep, visibility and resale value also matter, and when they conflict with the chart, they deserve priority.

Foreigners in Vietnam meet this in surprising places: the car salesperson who asks your birth year, the painter who suggests a shade "for your element", or in-laws who gently steer a wedding colour scheme.

Step one: find your element correctly

The birth element follows the lunar year, which begins at Tết, somewhere between late January and mid-February. If you were born in that window, check the date of Tết in your birth year; if you arrived before it, you belong to the previous lunar year. Some schools use Lập Xuân, the solar start of spring around 4 February, instead, so for birthdays close to Tết two practitioners may disagree.

A few examples to check your method against:

  • Bính Dần and Đinh Mão years: "fire in the furnace", Fire.
  • Mậu Thìn and Kỷ Tỵ: "wood of the great forest", Wood.
  • Canh Ngọ and Tân Mùi: "earth by the roadside", Earth.
  • Nhâm Thân and Quý Dậu: "metal of the sword's edge", Metal.
  • Bính Tý and Đinh Sửu: "water in the ravine", Water.

Any Vietnamese lunar calendar app will convert your birth date to the stem-and-branch year; the element follows from that.

Step two: colours that suit and colours that clash

Colours of the element you control, such as green for a Metal person, are usually considered acceptable but not a first choice. Some charts put purple under Fire and others treat it as a mixed colour; small differences between charts are normal.

House paint: heat and space matter most

In Vietnam, west-facing walls and roofs take brutal afternoon sun. Light colours such as white, cream and pale yellow reflect heat better than dark ones; a black or deep blue west wall can make the room behind it noticeably hotter by late afternoon. That is measurable, not a matter of belief.

In a narrow, dim tube house, light interior colours help daylight travel further. If your element favours a dark colour, bring it in through an accent wall, curtains, cushions or a rug rather than painting a whole room. You keep the five-element idea without turning the room into a cave.

A practical tip: paint a test patch on the actual wall and look at it in the morning and late afternoon before deciding. Shop swatches under fluorescent light look very different under tropical sun.

Car colour: what the chart leaves out

  • Heat: dark cars parked in the sun heat up faster than light ones.
  • Scratches and dust: glossy black shows every scratch and speck; silver, grey and white hide them better.
  • Visibility: in dense motorbike traffic, lighter colours are easier to spot at dusk and in heavy rain.
  • Resale: common colours generally resell more easily than unusual ones.

If your element's colour happens to be practical too, perfect. If not, a common compromise is a practical body colour with the element's colour in seat covers, a key ring or interior details.

Several people, several elements

Usually the head of the household's element guides shared spaces such as the facade and living room, while bedrooms follow their occupants. Couples whose elements clash often pick a bridging colour: a Fire husband and a Metal wife might choose Earth tones, since Fire feeds Earth and Earth feeds Metal. If you are a foreign partner, your in-laws may calculate your element too; it is usually a sign of inclusion.

Threats you can ignore

"The wrong car colour will cause an accident." "A clashing house colour will bankrupt you." Lines like these turn an aesthetic suggestion into fear and often lead to an offer of remedies for sale. Road accidents depend on speed, alertness, brakes and tyres; financial trouble depends on planning. No colour replaces those.

If you are taking out a loan for a house or car, build your own repayment plan or talk to an independent financial adviser rather than letting colour or a lucky date set the timing.

Small doses work best

Colour and older people at home

With grandparents or anyone with weak eyesight in the house, colour is also a safety issue. Stair edges should contrast with the treads so they are easy to see, especially on the dim stairs of a tube house. Light switches and door handles should stand out from the wall. Very pale, glossy floor tiles in bathrooms and kitchens can create glare and hide puddles. None of this appears on any element chart, but it genuinely reduces falls.

The gentlest way to use element colours is through small, changeable things: a phone case, a wallet, a scarf, a bracelet, a plant pot. Many Vietnamese people wear a bracelet of stones in their element's colour simply because it makes them feel good. The feng shui jewellery section of Vật Phẩm Phong Thủy, a Vietnamese-language shop delivering within Vietnam, has stones in many colours; the value lies in liking what you wear, not in any promise of changed luck.

Frequently asked questions

❓ Frequently asked questions

I was born in January. Which year's element do I have?
Check the date of Tết in your birth year. If you were born before it, you belong to the previous lunar year and may have a different element.
Can a Fire person use black?
Black belongs to Water, which controls Fire, so custom suggests limiting it. A small accent is fine, and by the theory itself moderate control is a form of balance.
What colour should a west-facing wall be?
Light colours such as white, cream or pale yellow reflect heat better. That is a measurable factor and should come first.
My partner and I have clashing elements. What colour for our home?
Use the head of household's element for shared spaces, or a bridging element that feeds both. Bedrooms can follow each person.
Does car colour affect safety?
Lighter colours are easier to see in the dark or rain. Beyond that, safety depends on driving, speed and the car's condition.
