House facing direction checker
Before buying, renting or building, many Vietnamese families check whether the way the house faces suits the head of the household. The method is Bát Trạch (Eight Mansions): your birth year and gender decide which four directions are favourable for you. Enter your details and the direction your main door faces, and the tool shows how it reads, plus where the bed, desk, altar and stove would traditionally go.
How this is calculated
- The digits of the birth year are added until one digit is left. Men and women read that number from two different rows of the Eight Mansions table, which gives a trigram (cung phi) and its Kua number.
- Each trigram gives the eight compass directions one of eight "stars". Four are favourable (Sheng Qi, Tian Yi, Yan Nian, Fu Wei) and four are unfavourable (Huo Hai, Liu Sha, Wu Gui, Jue Ming).
- The tool reads the star on the direction your door faces. Each direction covers a 45° slice of the compass.
- Traditionally the reading is done for the head of the household (gia chủ).
These results are a cultural reference from Vietnamese tradition. They are not a substitute for advice from an engineer or architect on how a home is built or laid out.
