Good and bad days on the Vietnamese lunar calendar

Many Vietnamese families still check the lunar calendar before a wedding, a shop opening, moving house, breaking ground, a death anniversary (giỗ) or the run-up to Tết. Pick a date to see its lunar date, whether it counts as an auspicious or inauspicious day, the good hours, and what the day is traditionally good for.

How this works

  • Lunar date. Vietnam uses a lunisolar calendar calculated for Vietnam’s time zone (UTC+7), so a few dates differ from the Chinese calendar.
  • Can chi. Every day carries one of 60 names built from ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches, written in Vietnamese with the element and animal in brackets. The Vietnamese zodiac has a Cat instead of a Rabbit and a Buffalo instead of an Ox.
  • Auspicious or inauspicious. Each day is ruled by one of twelve spirits; six make it a “hoàng đạo” (yellow path) day, six a “hắc đạo” (black path) day.
  • Day officer (trực). A cycle of twelve officers, from Establish to Close, says what a day suits — the source of the “good for” and “best avoided” lists.
  • Clash. A day clashes with the zodiac sign opposite its own branch; people of that sign tend to keep big events off it.

This is a cultural reference, not advice. Day-selection schools differ, and families often ask a monk or a fortune teller for weddings and burials. Dates and hours are Vietnam time.
